Dunkest NBA Playoffs Fantasy Game
This article is based on the fantasy basketball competition run at www.dunkest.com.
So now the playoffs are about to begin. Dunkest has decided on a couple of things.
1. Your Credits are reset back to 95, and your score is reset to 0.
2. Each match day will cover a full real day's play, so not every team or player will be involved in every match day.
The first point is a bit of a pain. The team you built and worked hard on all season in increasing its value is all now useless.
The second point encourages people to totally ditch their team after one Match Day to select players that will only be involved in the next Match Day.
Player stats below, sortable by clicking on the column headers, last updated 2015-06-16 19:00 GMT.
Below follows some strategy that I used for my Match Day 1 and 2 picks.
As an example I have put forward a few teams which I believe represent very good value for credits. The Exp Pts column is based on the players average points earned based on Dunkest scores over the entire season. The caveat here is that some players will be expected to up their performances in the play-offs, and will be given more court time. Other players may have got a high average during the regular season but will be less used in the play-offs. The average also fails to take into account the strength of the opposition. Davis may fail to hit the heights he hit during the season when he faces Golden State Warriors game after game.
Subs
These teams will leave you with enough credits to splash 9.5 on a Head Coach and have 16 credits left for the subs bench. Subs will only score you half points so maybe best not to invest in them. They can increase in value fairly drastically though, so do take time in choosing the right subs and you can increase your overall team value quickly.
Head Coaches
The HC position is pretty important. Lose and you could be looking at -10 pts but win and you could be earning over 20 pts. That's at least a 30 point swing. Here you are not really looking for the best coach. You are looking for the coach of the team most likely to win.
Looking at the match ups I like the Bulls coach and the Grizzlies coach. They will cost you less credits than for example Warriors and look almost as certain to win.
I check the bookies odds for this.
Match Day 1
Below are some sample teams from the players involved in Match Day 1. I will be picking a team something like one of these initially and then selling them all off. It will cost me 30 points to change the entire team, but I expect to score in the high about 200 on both match days, so the cost is worth it in my opinion.
There would be less value in trading all your subs each match day - but fail to trade your subs and you miss an opportunity to increase your teams value. Say Hansbrough hits a double double then expect his credits to increase from 4 to maybe 5. That is a credit earned that can be re-invested in your first 6 players.
In these sample teams, first 6 players are selected only, these earn full points. Assuming that you are playing the free game and start with 95 credits then the selections below will leave you 9.5 credits for a HC and at least 16 credits for 4 subs.
I think these teams give you the best value for money possible.
Match Day 2
Some sample teams from the players involved in Match Day 2. These teams are just examples, and I won't be updating these suggestions for each match day (unless someone pays me alot of money!). You may be able to improve on some of these teams depending on how much you managed to increase your teams value in Match Day 1.
