Colombia toe to toe with Argentina
|
Provisional Rankings based on
World Cup results so far
As well as the World Cup Trophy, top spot in the rankings is up for grabs for one of the teams left in the competition. With Spain's early exit it is guaranteed that there will be a new team at the top of the rankings. At the moment Colombia are set to take top. The 4 wins have helped them to tally up the points, where as some of the other contenders have dropped wins. For example Brazil drew with Mexico and their penalty victory against Chile will also be officially recorded as a draw. Colombia have never made the top spot before, their highest rank has been 3rd.
Argentina will be hot on Colombia's tails, however, Colombia could potentially pick up close to the maximum ranking points available for one game if the beat Brazil in the quarter final. Brazil are currently ranked third.
We are now in the closing stages of the tournament with teams playing against highly ranked opposition and also with a heavy weighting assigned to such a highly prestigious tournament. There is a lot of points to pick up and even France would likely make up the 323 points that they are short of Colombia if France were to go on and win Final. So it will likely be the team to win all three remaining matches (i.e. the ones who will be champions) that will also go on to sit on top of the rankings.
The losers will be Spain and England. Spain will fall from the number one spot in spectacular fashion. They have held number 1 since Aug 2011, but now look likely to slip to as low as 9th - which will be the lowest they have been since July 2007 (7 years!).
England are also on the slide and could find themselves in 20th spot, 4 below Costa Rica. If Costa Rica do make 16th it will be their highest ranking ever, beating their previous best of 17th in Jan 2004.
The fifa ranking points are awarded based on the result of the match (M), the importance of the competition (I), the strength of the opposition (T) and the regional strength of the confederation that the opposition belongs to (C). The total points(P) awarded for the team is calculated as P=M*I*T*C. The points over the last 4 years are then averaged out with a weighting to give more recent years more weight.
M: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw (an extra point for the penalty shootout winner if required)
I: 4 for World Cup Final, 2.5 for Qualifier, 1 for Friendly
T: based on current ranking 1st=200 points 2nd=198, 3rd=197 etc.
C: both UEFA and S.America are 1, CONCACAF is 0.88, AFC and CAF = 0.86 and OFC = 0.85.
The ranking points mostly just attract sponsorship for FIFA and sometimes bear little resemblance to the reality of how good a team is. Currently the rankings are sponsored by Coca Cola. However they are used to agree the seeding of teams for the group stages of the World Cup. Switzerland took advantage this time round and by virtue of their ranking (above both Italy and Netherlands) they were seeded for the draw. Thus they avoided all the heavy hitters like Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Germany. This possibly helped them in a small manner to qualify from their group.
Listed below is the ranking points earned for the two teams provisionally ranked in the top 2. Of course this could all change very rapidly as you see by how quickly you can rack up the points with the multiplier of 4 for a World Cup. It certainly has helped Colombia jump from 8th and 1137 points up to potentially 1st with 1500 points and more. The points are averaged out over the year.
